5 Surprising Reasons You Should Write Every Day if You Want to Succeed

Please give a warm welcome to our first contributor Olivia Jones here on Cali Jae! Enjoy!

Fellow bloggers among you will know just how much a single productive writing session can shape the success of your business on any given day, but how well do we truly understand our precious skill? Writing is so much more than mere work. For those who relish in the process, it becomes a calling and it permeates everything that we do. Yes, despite the occasional creative rut we get stuck in, the beauty of writing seems to outshine all of its challenges.

However, what about those whose work doesn’t entirely rely on writing? Perhaps you’ve been too busy wearing a multitude of other hats in your own business to consider that this single practice could change the course of your own career growth. The following are just a handful of reasons that just might inspire you to pick up a pen every now and then and try your hand at wordsmithing to boost your success!

1.    Reflect in order to grow

Life is usually moving so fast that we rarely get the chance to truly contemplate what is happening to us and around us. Writing gives us a safe place to slow down or completely escape the notion of time and take an entirely different view (or several) on any given situation. It helps us express our emotions and our thinking patterns emerge, allowing us to recognize our own misconceptions and become better over time.

Studies have shown that this type of daily writing has a positive impact on our critical thinking, which is essential both in everyday life and our professional development. When there’s a difficult decision to make, pick up your journal and scribble away!

2.    Be an inspiration

If your own work incorporates a hefty dose of daily writing, you likely come across many people in your own niche whose articles and bits of wisdom give you a morale boost or make you smile on a particularly bleak day. Imagine being that to someone who desperately needs it.

Writing is an incredible way to make a difference, in your community, as a trusted source of information, with your knowledge or your personal story. We as humans are madly in love with words, and when you pour your heart and soul out onto a piece of paper, or the digital version thereof, you significantly improve your chances to connect to your audience. The old saying that the pen is mightier than the sword is no coincidence.

3.    Get your creative juices flowing

No matter what you do, offering innovation is the one thing that keeps businesses afloat and at the forefront of growth. In order to keep that edge, it takes an ample dose of creativity to keep sparking new ideas that will drive personal and professional advancement. Writing is a simple way to tap into your creative well of novelty and bring your ideas to life.

You’re on the train heading home, scrolling down your social media newsfeed? Instead, you can take out your trusty ballpoint pens and a notebook and start brainstorming on your next novel, unique product, or a great blog post. Nothing drives success like unhindered imagination taking shape in your own words.

4.    Hone your communication skills

Whether you’re looking for a new job, wish to advance in your current one, or you’re tackling the endeavor of entrepreneurship, you need to connect. In order to do so successfully, leave a great first impression and attract a wider readership, your words need to resonate with your audience.

Regular writing sessions let you review, play with, and enrich your vocabulary, as well as your entire communication approach in a wide variety of situations. It gives you time to process your thoughts and find the right words, and that in turn helps your brain do the same when a crucial conversation takes place.

5.    Build your identity

It’s so easy to get lost in this sea of trends, online and offline alike, and lose our own voice as we are immersed into the noise made by others. While we’re all growing, developing creatures that strive to improve all the time, it’s essential that we can always recognize our true selves – and this is where writing can help you safeguard and shape your identity.

The solitary process of writing gives you a safe space to face your fears, limitations and all your innermost struggles. It’s a healing tool that will always let you recognize your own truth, and stay devoted to your own purpose, whatever it may be. After all, authenticity is one of the most invaluable qualities that define success today, so why not do your best to cherish it with the help of such simple, rewarding habits, such as writing?

5 Important Lessons Learned As An Entrepreneur + Blogger

Each person has their unique story, a story that inspires and a story that portrays their experiences that have led them to the point they are at now. I believe everything you go through is a learning process and whether it is a step in the right direction or a bump in the road, it propels you to where you need to be!

IMG_0254.PNG

Being an entrepreneur brings about many blessings; meeting amazing people, doing what you love, being your own boss and having that freedom to achieve your desires. It also brings along obstacles that we have to overcome both personally, professionally, and financially.

NEVER STOP LEARNING

I have always enjoyed school and learning about different aspects of topics. No matter what age you are and where you are in life, you should never stop learning because that is when you stop growing. Study your passion, take a class in something that interests you or read a book on an interesting new topic! This allows you to grow and broaden your knowledge! For all my entrepreneurs out there master your craft and never stop learning it. This will allow you to become an expert in the field and really gain the trust of the people you work with. I will never forget the conversation I had one on one with Essie Weingarten (can I just input a quick squeal here at how awesome that was?). She told me that technology is constantly changing so you have to keep your mind open and change with the times! Be open to new opportunities and go with the flow!

BUILD LASTING RELATIONSHIPS

I can't even begin to describe how important this is. One of my favorite parts about being an entrepreneur is networking and building relationships with like-minded people. Whether it is a friend, a mentor, or a coach you will be blessed with newfound knowledge, a wonderful community and the ability to learn and share what you have learned with others. By being involved in Facebook groups, reaching out to those I want to collaborate with or learn from I have really gotten involved in the community and have built relationships that have not just landed me referrals and clients, but friendships that I know will last a lifetime which is priceless.

PUT OUT GOOD VIBES

Are you putting out good vibes to your audience? Put out good vibes and positivity and you will see it come back to you full circle. I know life isn't easy and it is easy to complain from time to time, but you have to motivate and inspire your audience. Share your story and let them know they are not alone. People will be attracted to your energy, so put your best foot forward and share your amazing vibes!

DON'T GET DISCOURAGED & PERSEVERE

The road of entrepreneurship is not an easy task. It is so easy to get discouraged and give up but I can tell you right now when you persevere through those hard times, you will have incredible breakthroughs and become stronger from your struggles. Every struggle you overcome allows you to learn and share your experience with others. I can't even tell you how many times I have wanted to throw in the towel and after sticking through it for a few days, have come out of that funk with a breakthrough idea that has led me to where I am now. My Dad always instilled in me to persevere no matter what. It has been my mantra word from day 1!

LET FAITH BE BIGGER THAN YOUR FEAR

Ever had something you wanted to accomplish but were to afraid to put yourself out there? Yep, we have all been there. You can't let fear stop you, go for your dreams and go outside of your comfort zone! Trust me, once you let faith be bigger than your fear you will start to see amazing things happen on the other side of fear. Go big or go home!

What have you learned through your journey as an entrepreneur?

How To Get Out Of A Creative Rut + Spark Inspiration

As an entrepreneur it is normal to go through ruts and feel uninspired. When this happens I shut all my technology off for a good while and go back to square one and do things that make me happy and it always gets me fired up again!

IMG_0258.PNG

Every blogger has gone through a creative block at one point or another and it is really rough. I have had blocks that have lasted for weeks and really made me reevaluate my websites and where I wanted to take them.

I am a big believer in everything happens for a reason. Usually when I go through these blocks, I have an amazing vision at the end of it. Which technically, makes the block worth it because I learn a few new things and I am bettering not only my business but myself as a writer and creative entrepreneur.

Here are a few tips and pointers for helping your creative flow when you are feeling completely uninspired!

Get away from social media and your computer...I find that when I feel uninspired, going on social media and my computer makes my head feel even more cluttered. Take however long you can and close your computer. Read a book, watch that show on Netflix you've been wanting to see, go outside, or go meet up with a friend. Do something to get your mind off of blogging/business. You will be surprised to find inspiration in the most unlikely places!

Reevaluate EVERYTHING...What's working? What isn't working?...These are the two most important questions to ask yourself when you have no idea what to do next. Take out a pen and piece of paper and go back to square one. What topics are the most rewarding for you to write about? Maybe you need a brand redesign or new layout. Take a step back and figure out what you should really be focusing on that will be most beneficial for you and your readers.

Talk to someone and get their honest opinion...This is one of the most helpful things you can do. Getting an outside opinion will allow you think outside the box and you may even get some good advice!

How To Spark Inspiration

Change up your computer screensaver and clean up your desktop

Organizing my computer always makes my mind feel clearer. Changing up my desktop background every so often helps me to change my perspective and get inspiration form a quote or a shiny glittery gold backdrop!

Read a magazine or book (fashion magazines always inspire my creativity)

I have always loved fashion and this business stemmed from my love of design and creativity. Browsing through fashion magazines and seeing all the different colors, textures and patterns inspire the designer in me and always give me new ideas for color palettes, images and logos!

Decorate something (planner, draw, write)

My newest obsession has been planner decorating. It makes planning your to dos so much fun and it inspires you to get them done. Decorating my planner or just simply doodling inspires my creative juices. There is something to be said for simplicity.

Browse Pinterest

This may be a give in but whenever I am stuck on blog posts to write or ideas for my business I like to browse Pinterest to see what's trending and what my ideal audience is pinning. After having a little pinning sesh I am always ready to pop out a blog post!

Get out and do something fun!

Whenever I am in a rut, I always find that getting out of the house and going to a cute coffee shop with a friend, a city adventure or just meeting up with someone who inspires me really helps and gets me back on track!

Blogging 101: The Basics

Since I started my first blog in 2012 I have been asked multiple times how to start your own blog and have helped many people over the years with their blogs and brands. I have learned so much over the past 5 years and figured it would be the perfect time to share some beginner tips if you would like to start your own blog.

IMG_0234.PNG

ver the years, my style and interests have changed but style and helping others has always been the root of my passion.

THE BASICS

research, learn, research some more and never stop learning!

I pretty much learned everything by watching youtube videos, reading other blog posts, browsing Google and Pinterest for endless hours. It pays off trust me!

choose a platform

I first started on Tumblr, then moved to Blogger (because it was free and this girl was on a very strict budget) since that was more appropriate for what I wanted in a blog and then I moved to Squarespace when 1. I found out that on Blogger you don't own your content and it could be taken down at any moments notice and I was taking no chances. I dove in head first to paying for a web service and haven't looked back since. I self-taught myself how to use it and it was extremely user friendly and easy to learn. If you would like an overview of why I chose Squarespace, let me know in the comments!

chose a blog name

This is a vital aspect that you not only need to really think through but think about your name in the future and how you can grow with it. Make sure it's not just a trendy name or some crazy words that no one can pronounce or spell. Make it easy, reflect your style and be timeless!

choose social media channels

If I could go back in time, the one thing I would do would be to make all my social media channels the same name. I can still do that, but at this point in time it's not only risky but I have come to appreciate having my twitter and instagram my own name so people get to know me better. Again, do your research and think about it you want your face to be the brand or if you strictly want it to just be your blog name. Choose the social media channels where your readers are! For me, twitter, Instagram and Facebook are my top 3 referrers so I tend to focus on those more since I know that is where my target audience is (more on this in the next Blogging 101 post!).

create an email

I started off with an @ gmail account since it was free as I was just starting out and I really love the whole Google system. After a couple years I switched my email to info @ calijae.com since it not only looked more professional but allows people to know who and where their emails are coming from.

Top 5 Makeup Products

IMG_0233.PNG

These products are my ride or die items that I will continue to buy throughout the years. I have combo acne prone skin, so whatever doesn't aggravate my sensitive skin or eyes and works, I keep using! If it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)

Kevyn Aucoin Contour Powder in Medium

Man do those Sephora samples get you. I was a lucky, and snagged a sample of this and have been obsessed ever since. In my opinion, you don't know contour unless you have tried this product. This is an extremely expensive product and I have heard that this Elf contour palette is a dupe so I will keep you guys updated on that. I have a hard time finding products that work with my skin and I not only use this for contouring but as an eyeshadow and the little sample has lasted me for quite some time so I highly recommend!

Carli Bybel Deluxe Eyeshadow + Highlighter Palette

My sister got this for me for my birthday this year and I almost cried..I kid you not. She knows how much I wanted that palette and I have been OBSESSED to say the least. I really hope this palette sticks around because I may need to buy some backups, that is how AMAZING this product is. The formulas are so soft, easy to blend, rich pigment and can we talk about how blinding those highlights are?! GLOW UP GIRL! I always get compliments when wearing the eyeshadows or highlighters and love the versatility of the palette as well!

Jack Black Lip Balm in Black Tea + Blackberry

It only took about 25 years to find my perfect lip balm. It is super hydrating, has spf to protect against the sun and I love how I can just wear this on its own and it looks great. It smells amazing, is thick enough to provide hydration and protection yet doesn't leave your lips feeling sticky or leaving that nasty white line!

Dr. Jart BB Cream

I don't even know where to start with this one. This is my holy grail face product for sure. My face is so sensitive and will break out from anything. I love how this combines both skincare and makeup so you get great coverage while protecting skin and treating it. I love using this day to day and love wearing this to the beach or pool during the summer!

Marc Jacobs Gel Eyeliner in Black

Again with the Sephora samples..brilliant marketing strategy..well done Sephora..well done. I have been on the hunt for an eyeliner that doesn't budge (or make me look like a raccoon), stays in my waterline and has great pigment and this takes the cake. It is so creamy and stays in my waterline (I swear I have the runniest eyes). It is super pigmented and now I want more colors! I have my eyes on that white!

Trends I'm Loving: Carli Bybel x Missguided Collection

This collection is the perfect mix of Clueless and Pop 90's vibes like Britney and Justin denim days, am I right?!

When I saw this collection I immediately fell in love. First of all, I love Carli and have been a fan of her ever since she first started her youtube channel and it is amazing to see how she has grown her brand to over 3 million subscribers and be able to launch her own clothing line as a result of following her passion. She has been a huge inspiration to me; as having my own clothing line has always been one of my dreams.

What's On My Fashion Winter Wishlist

During the wintertime I am all about the cozy vibes and as many layers as humanly possible since I am always cold!

pete-bellis-189610.jpg

Olive Jeggings | Pom Beanie | Fleece Lined Jacket | Black Knit Sweater | Neutral Over The Knee Boot | Super Cozy Slipper Boots | Adidas Hoodie | Long Warm Socks | Black Jeggings

Olive Jeggings

Jeggings are my jam, I am either wearing leggings or jeggings during the wintertime because they are what fit best, make me feel comfortable and pairs great with so many different things especially with so many different colors to chose from! If you know me you know I live in black 99.9% of the time but have (I know shocking) been branching out into some more colorful options (okay very neutral colors) and look these green jeggings. I am a huge fan of olive greens and would love to try this color out!

Pom Beanie

Can we just take a second to admire how freakin' adorable this beanie is. I know some of y'all think I'm crazy for liking the pom pom look but I love the added texture and you know I'm all about the fun vibes!

Fleece Lined Jacket

I get so cold during the winter months and haven't found that perfect warm coat yet. My sister actually found this and is going to be a holiday present which I am SO excited about. It is so warm, so cute and even cinches in a the waist to give you some shape back!

Black Knit Sweater

During the cooler months, you will most likely find me in some kind of sweater (since I am always so damn cold). Even though I'm tiny, I love the oversize chunky sweaters, because hello cozy and warm! I love how you could dress this down with a pair of jeans or leggings or dress it up with a cute skirt and some leggings and booties!

Over The Knee Boot

I have always been a fan of over the knee boots ever since I laid my eyes upon these Stuart Weitzman beauties BUT they are extremely expensive and the Steve Madden ones above are a fraction of the cost and equally as cute! They not only keep you warm but keep you looking super stylish!

 Super Cozy Slipper Boots

I have been on the hunt for some fun, cute and really warm slipper boots for quite a while and when I saw these, it was just love at first sight. They are so unique (truly fitting the abundance of different styles I rock) and can't wait to chill by the fireplace with these babies on, sipping a hot of tea and watching a Christmas movie!

Adidas Hoodie

I have always been a big fan of adidas through my years of sports and fashion blogging (and school) years. I am a sucker for hoodies when I am lounging (especially when they are cute like this one) and have been really loving the cropped look lately.

Long Warm Socks

My feet always get the coldest so I am always rocking multiple pairs or socks or heavy duty socks during the cold months. I love layering long socks with different boots to create a cute textured style and the added warmth as a bonus!

Black Jeggings

I had to incorporate a pair of my favorite pairs of jeans in black. Express jeans are my ride or die. They are so comfortable and fit me like a glove. You can't go wrong with a classic pair of black skinny jeans!

7 Ways To Focus On Self Care

Are you making self care a priority? If not now is the time to start! Here are some ways you can focus on self care!

IMG_9431.PNG

- pamper -

You have one body to take care of so treat yourself! Paint your nails, get that facial, go for a massage. The best part about this is you can either have an at home pamper sesh or go to a spa or salon for a few hours. This will 100% help you to recharge you batteries and make you feel great.

- exercise -

We all know how important exercise is and many of us don't make it a priority. Just get moving in any way you can whether it is stretching, yoga, pilates, taking a spin class, going for a walk, going on a walk, going to a gym. You can chose whether you want to get moving at home or out so you feel comfortable!

- meditation -

This has been a game changer for me especially this year dealing with health issues as well as anxiety and depression. Being more mindful and really meditating and taking the time to be still and present has really helped me to calm down, relax and sleep better. You can sit or lay down and just close your eyes or you can do guided meditations.

- have a relaxing night in -

When you are feeling overworked or overtired, having a cozy night in is just what you need. Get all comfy throw on a Netflix show or documentary, have a nice cup of tea and snuggle up with a blanket. Sometimes a distraction from the real world while we unwind can make a huge difference.

- read -

I know not everyone is a reader but reading is one of my biggest hobbies. It not only relaxes me and allows me to decompress a bit but I love losing track of time while reading a good book. It also keeps your mind sharp which is always a plus!

- hygiene -

This is #1 priority. Take care of the only body you have. Nurture it, love it and give it the attention it deserves.

- diet -

This is also a biggie. Be more mindful of the foods you put into your body. I went dairy and gluten free since I was having bad sensitivities to them and have been eating as healthy and organic as possible. It really does make a difference. You have to listen to what you body is telling you.

As most of you know, I wear black pretty much 90% of the time. It's classic, goes with anything and is the easiest to style. I love how the over the knee boots and leather jacket give this casual look an edgy vibe. I have to thank my sister for being such an amazing photographer and capturing some pretty epic shots especially that last candid! It was a beautiful day and I was so blessed I was feeling well enough to have a little photoshoot and enjoy some quality time with the family. Always be grateful for the little things as they mean the most!

My Fall 2017 Reading List

One of my favorite things to do during the Fall time is to curl up on the couch with a cozy blanket, a cup of coffee or tea and a captivating book.

THE MAGNOLIA STORY

Can we just all take a moment to fangirl over Chip and Joanna and how adorable they are? Fixer Upper has been one of my favorite shows ever since it aired. I am completely obsessed with Joanna's style and not only are they incredibly talented, but hilarious and totally relatable. I am so excited to dive into their story!

CITY OF GLASS

This is the third book in The Mortal Instruments series and I am hooked! I have always been a sucker for Young Adult Fiction and this series will completely take you away to another world and have you addicted!

THE LOST SYMBOL

From the author of The Da Vinci Code, comes this mystery thriller filled with science, secrets and symbols. Dan Brown is my favorite author of all time and I have always been a huge fan of his writing. His books make you feel like you are in them and you are able to picture what is going on which is incredible.

ORIGIN

This is the newest book by Dan Brown that just launched last week so I had to include it. I can't even begin to describe the excitement that washed over me when I found out a new book in the Robert Langdon series was launching!

YOU ARE A BADASS

This book has been on my reading list for quite some time now and it wasn't until my fellow Lyme Warrior, Christina posted on Instagram that she was starting a book club with this being the first book. I have always wanted to be a part of a book club but was always hesitant because of "keeping up" with the reading. But it has been my goal to read more and with only 10 pages a day or so, I think I can manage :)

Please come join the Facebook group and let's bring out our inner badass HERE Christina wanted to create a platform to focus on how amazing we all are and to be the best self we can be. This is a place for those dealing with hardship such as Lyme and other co infections to focus on hope versus fear!

What is on your reading list for Fall? Let me know in the comments below and if you will be joining the book club!
